Beyond Waste: Paper Bag Recycling & Smarter Sustainability

On 23rd March 25 (Sunday), the Bombay Catholic Sabha, Environment Forum organized a talk on two crucial topics:

  • Why composting at the source is the key to sustainability
  • The used paper bag collection project

I was invited to speak on the Kandivali Recycling Group’s initiative on used paper bags, an idea that emerged from our failed attempts at a tree plantation project. Instead of focusing solely on planting trees, we redirected our efforts toward tree conservation. The core principle of this project is simple: instead of discarding paper bags after a single use, we extend their life.

The collected bags are donated to NGOs supporting persons with disabilities (PWDs) for reuse or resale. The model operates through volunteers and volunteer groups, who:

  • Collect used paper bags with handles in perfect condition
  • Pack them in lots of 100 in a sturdy cardboard box
  • Send them to a partnering courier agency supporting the initiative
  • The courier team dispatches the boxes to designated NGOs

Key Takeaways from the Event

One of the most insightful sessions was led by Christopher, CEO of DERT Sustainable Solution. Some thought-provoking ideas he shared:

  • To encourage people to walk or use public transport, he compared cars to wheelchairs, emphasizing our over-reliance on personal vehicles.
  • He highlighted that we get what we demand. For example, real estate projects always include parking spaces but rarely prioritize green initiatives.
  • He introduced a shredding machine he designed to efficiently process dried leaves, twigs, branches, plastic, and metal waste at the source.
    • The shredded output serves as an absorbent for society’s composting plant/s.
    • Shredding plastic and metal at the source reduce fuel costs and increases revenue for societies by allowing waste collectors to transport larger quantities efficiently.
    • The machine is noise-free, addressing a common concern associated with shredders.
    • He also demonstrated the machine in action and mentioned that these machines are also available for rent.

Additionally, we were introduced to a woman entrepreneur, Ms. Cecilia (Mobile: +91 9967503924), who creates cloth bags from old clothes provided to her. This presents another valuable opportunity to upcycle waste into useful products.

Impact of the Session

Overall, it was a wonderful and engaging session, bringing together various sustainability initiatives. Our work with used paper bags gained city-wide attention, and this could lead to an expansion of our reach in the near future.
